Transcending Thoughts
Are you above the line?
Are you above the line, or Below the Line?
Above the line is where we create our lives, we’re empowered, we feel love, peace and joy. This is where truth lives.
Below the line is where we’re reacting, we’re victims, we struggle, experience fear, judgment and resentment. This is where illusion and our egos live.
And we have a choice in every moment. A choice as to where we stand and a choice to learn the lessons that will put us above the line again – where we experience effortless abundance.
The Knowledge & Self-Cultivation area is where we learn the lessons we are here to live – and being diagonally across from the Love & Relationships area, they are ‘intimately’ connected.
One way to stay above the line for longer periods is to share miracles. What we focus on expands, remember? So here are two miracles of my own.
Last week I was very proud of myself. I've traveled a lot and for the first time ever, I managed to pack a week’s worth of clothing into a carry on bag for my trip to Las Vegas. I even told friends I wanted to experience traveling light. And because I had my computer bag, I checked in the carry on bag.
When I arrived - no bag. Delta told me my bag would probably be there when I woke the next morning. Next morning they still hadn't been able to locate it. Not a good sign, I thought. So, I went off to my workshop in the only clothes I had and was not a happy camper. I was definitely below the line in the land of struggle and resistance and not very present.
It took me about an hour to lighten up. It came to me that I had got what I asked for – to experience traveling light. I started seeing the humor in my bag going off on its own little journey. I even started feeling that even if it didn't showed up it wouldn’t be the end of the world. I could buy a black t-shirt and create another outfit and I’d get through the week OK. No-one else cared. I got to a place where it felt less complicated not to have to think about clothes each day. And this from someone who’d never been able to travel light because I couldn't figure out what I’d feel like wearing. My answer - take lots of options.
That evening, having learned what I needed to learn, of course my bag showed up. It had gone on United Airlines to San Francisco – and probably had a great time.
A very small example of finding the gift in something.
Want a bigger one?
Last September my year long relationship that I’d created so easily and seemed so right, ended. This one was not a one hour derailment. Although I very quickly recognized this as an opportunity for growth I also had to feel my feelings and they were to put it mildly, overwhelming. I created a lot of space for myself to get though this, pulling back on my work and other things.
I decluttered the Knowledge & Self-Cultivation and Love & Relationships area of my home and returned things that were not mine. I questioned the stories I was creating. Long story short, I came to see some of the things I’d been too close to see and I came to discover many gifts. For one, my idea of what is possible in a relationship has expanded greatly.
Meanwhile we’ve both come through a lot and come out the other side good friends. We’ve even been on 2 vacations together in the last couple of months – something I couldn't have imagined in those first two months after we split up. It is truly a miracle.
What our relationship looks like has changed – and we’ve been able to flow with that. He is still in my life, is still a gift to me, is still one of my biggest supporters and we still have fun together when we choose to be together. In a way, we have the perfect relationship.
So – what these 2 examples have taught me is that we need to allow ourselves to fully experience whatever is happening and then release it. I could have resisted losing my bag for a lot longer and I could have resisted the relationship breaking up for way longer – and I would have kept myself below the line – in the land of turmoil, struggle and frustration. Why me, why me? Look what he did to me! And that would have attracted more of the same energy.
I know both of these experiences were perfect.
I know how to attract my perfect relationship and I know they don't always look the way I expect. I know I'm becoming the person I need to be to have the relationship I want and somewhere out there he is too.
Tips for Staying above the line - or returning there!
1. Whatever you are experiencing, know there is a gift in it for you. This belief will empower you move through the discomfort and/or pain and feel what you’re feeling and let it go.
2. Take a look at the area of the Bagua related to what’s going on. The Knowledge & Self-Cultivation area is a good place to start as this is where you learn the lessons, or not – which allow you to create what you really want. When I looked at this area I realized my bathroom cupboards were full of stuff I hadn't sorted since I moved in – so at midnight I was sitting on the bathroom floor pulling everything out and decluttering. Felt really good.
3. Focus on miracles. Anything you are learning, any energy you are shifting – even if small – is a miracle. Even in the midst of sitting there below the line in fear or struggle, you can find a miracle to acknowledge.
4. Allow yourself to fully experience what is happening. This is not about stuffing your feelings. Some things take longer to move through than others and you will do it at your own speed. And you’ll probably go back and forth above the line and below the line, but you’ll notice you start spending longer above the line in peace and truth and freedom.
5. Know that you get the experiences you need for your growth – even if it doesn’t feel like it for a time. I know that relationship was perfect for me and I know what is possible for me has expanded because of this experience.
It's your turn. I'd love to hear how you are choosing to be above the line - and turning lemons into lemonade.
May you live your life more and more above the line.
Warmly,
